BACKSTAGE AT PUBLIC SCHOOL NEW YORK FW14

I photographed some grooming at the mens shows backstage for Details.com during NYFW FW14. You can see that article here.

Here are some fun extra photos! It was super cool to see Public School’s first show and unisex collection as well as beauty master Gucci Westman and Kate Lanphear. The show was casted by Andrew Weir and featured only IMG female models.

There were more men than I’ve ever seen at Pitti. It’s only my third year but the internet has affected Pitti a lot. I wasn’t able to see much of the actual clothes that were being show inside the tradeshow as I focused on the many men outside. Definitely the land of peacocks. I tried to capture guys that were well-tailored, yet unique in the details. Nothing too crazy.

Fashion Week: Backstage at Alexander McQueen Fall 2014, London Collections: Men

Staged in a deconsecrated church, designer Sarah Burton stayed true to the brand’s roots with kilts and dark, sharply tailored pieces that went down the runway to Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.”

Check out my year of street style images for details.com and more. Thanks so much for this opportunity, Details. I am really blessed. It’s been a great year. Look for my AW14 men’s fashion show coverage coming up next week!

We’ve started to do some “Just The Detail” street style posts at Details.com - featuring different trends and details. This is nice because I can take both traditional sartorialist-esque portraits but also snap a la Tommy Ton/Bill Cunningham and just capture whatever I think is interesting instinctually. I haven’t posted as many men on my site lately besides the last few posts. Here’s one of my favorites focusing on Black Caps.

I had the honor of getting in touch and collaborating with one of the most well-known photographers in the street style photography movement, Melodie Jeng. Melodie runs her own website, thenycstreets.com, which features hundreds of shots she took of people on the streets of NYC and around the world. Her list of people she has shot on the streets include fashion giants such as Marc Jacobs, Nick Wooster, well known bloggers such as Travis Gumbs and Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette, and many more familiar faces in the industry. Melodie also works for Details.com/Details Magazine and Models.com. Her resume is an extremely impressive one, which is why I was honored when I was told by her that The Calderwood Project looks great and she’d love to be featured.

When I asked Melodie to describe her personal photography style, this is what she had to say : The way I approach my photography is that it’s a way to learn. I’m always trying to learn. I started taking street portraits because I wanted to learn about other people and practice interacting with my subjects. I’d like to think my photographs are curious — a lot of them have become photographs from fashion week with popular figures in fashion, but I also try to keep it real, genuine. The people might not necessarily being wearing the flashiest or most expensive outfits. Ultimately, I want to capture people that are comfortable in their skin (and clothes, basically a second layer). I want the photos to be honest portrayals of them, or at least honest portrayals of them through my eyes. I do love clothes, but I also love faces and beauty. Ultimately, I think of my self as making quick, beautiful portraits in various environments.”
