I had the honor of getting in touch and collaborating with one of the most well-known photographers in the street style photography movement, Melodie Jeng. Melodie runs her own website, thenycstreets.com, which features hundreds of shots she took of people on the streets of NYC and around the world. Her list of people she has shot on the streets include fashion giants such as Marc Jacobs, Nick Wooster, well known bloggers such as Travis Gumbs and Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette, and many more familiar faces in the industry. Melodie also works for Details.com/Details Magazine and Models.com. Her resume is an extremely impressive one, which is why I was honored when I was told by her that The Calderwood Project looks great and she’d love to be featured.
When I asked Melodie to describe her personal photography style, this is what she had to say : “The way I approach my photography is that it’s a way to learn. I’m always trying to learn. I started taking street portraits because I wanted to learn about other people and practice interacting with my subjects. I’d like to think my photographs are curious — a lot of them have become photographs from fashion week with popular figures in fashion, but I also try to keep it real, genuine. The people might not necessarily being wearing the flashiest or most expensive outfits. Ultimately, I want to capture people that are comfortable in their skin (and clothes, basically a second layer). I want the photos to be honest portrayals of them, or at least honest portrayals of them through my eyes. I do love clothes, but I also love faces and beauty. Ultimately, I think of my self as making quick, beautiful portraits in various environments.”
